The term ‘Madonna’ is actually a contraction of the Italian ‘mia donna’, which means ‘my lady’, and therefore refers to Mary. Statues of this kind represent purity, maternal care and innocence. Traditionally, She is depicted with the baby Jesus.
This Madonna was crafted from alabaster in Italy during the 16th century. The statue also features a layer of polychromy, an application of multiple colours. Over time, with the deterioration of binding agents, the upper layers of colour flake away, revealing the original yellowish-white colour of the alabaster. This statue also underwent minor restoration work on the head.
